In the Image of our Saviour…….

The last post was heading here, to this spot….. In the image of Man, God was created is a primer and can be found here . It finishes with a question which ponders how we can expose deception.

Firstly I might describe what deception looks like, because it is quite hard to find it in ourselves – Deception is often the feeling of “being right”. Not only right but SO RIGHT we don’t need to question it, and people who do question it… well they are irritating. The Angel of Light, the author of deception hides in those places where we won’t look.

The Apostle Paul began as Saul. He was so convinced he was right that he persecuted Christians. When I say persecuted…. he killed them. If your unfamiliar with the story – Paul heard a voice from Heaven that went something like this “Saul, Saul why do you persecute me?” (Acts 9:4)

Before I go on, one more Bible verse from Mathew ” They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’”

It doesn’t take a theologian or a genius to see a connection between doing stuff or not doing stuff and doing or not doing it to Jesus.

I want to look at these verses through someone else’s eyes – through the eyes of the scapegoat. A scapegoat is used by the powerful to deflect trouble away from themselves, a way to hide ones own problems by projecting them onto another. For example: “those lazy migrants come here and steal our jobs”

The thing about the scapegoat is that they know something that we don’t know… they know the awful truth, the truth we do not want to hear. They know the injustice and evil of the system. They know it because they live it…. whatever we do to them is part of this repressed deception we have and hold on to. And they experience this truth in the way that the parable from Matthew described to us, or in the violent way of Saul. Sometimes they feel the truth in physical pain and blood spilled.

As a site of truth…. that is where Jesus is!

This brings us back to the question I posed at the beginning “what are the things that might help us out of our deception”

In simple terms, whenever we identify with the scapegoat we are at the site of salvation.

And in even simpler terms – in America, the scapegoats were clearly labelled. Latinos, Mexicans, Muslims, LGBTI…. In Australia we have some of these and others. Some we hide off shore because salvation means uncovering the repressed hidden stuff inside.

Paul’s life was transformed when he became one of the scapegoated. Where are we meant to go? Who are we to become?
