You Must Be Born Again

One thing I have often wondered about is this term – “being born again”

We are two thousand years down the track…surely we understand what it is, why even question it?

I am increasingly convinced that we have no idea! Unknown to most of us –  how we think about the Gospel has been shaped by many factors – far too many for me to talk about on a short blog Post. The point is, when we approach scripture with our particular “world view”  we blind ourselves to much of what scripture has to say to us.

It is incredibly hard to step outside of what you understand and believe AND LISTEN from another point of view.

In a recent poem (found here) I spoke about the divorce of religion and science and the need for a reconciliation. There have been many other divorces in our sordid history as church. Paul says in Corinthians:

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you,but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.  My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas[b]”; still another, “I follow Christ.”

Right from the start we began splitting and have continued this pattern to this day – the plethora of denominations and Pauls words in Corinthians bear Testament to our carnal nature – our NOT born again way of thinking. A special note – even the person who makes the claim “I follow Christ” is in no better position than the others. The divisive nature of the claim part of the carnality….if carnality is actually a word?

The reason we fight against being born again is that it is a painful experience – for both Mother and Child.

As I mentioned earlier – science is often treated as the enemy – however truth is truth, no matter where it is found. Science, particularly psychology, has uncovered a lot about our hidden motivations. The thing about hidden things is that we can not see them – we can tell everyone “I follow Christ” in a loud and confident voice all we want but it will not change our hidden motivations, the real drum beat that we move to.

Here it is interesting to note that other branches of Christianity (ones that we have divorced) see this deception as our primary enemy. While we spend our time trying to quit sinning and offer Jesus as a sacrifice to save us from….himself, others recognize the false self that we have built and see Jesus as freeing us from this bondage to live life in a new way.

So what does “born again” look like? I think Jesus hints at this when he talks about the houses that we build on sand – they come tumbling down. Hence we avoid being born again – spiritual enlightenment is in a downward direction.
