More Owls!

It’s the morning of the first day of the year, most of you are probably still asleep as I write this…….I’ll tap the keys lightly so as not to wake you, although if you have a hangover – NO SYMPATHY – sorry that wasn’t very nice. It took me many years to figure out that self inflicted pain is soooo easy to avoid. Make a mental note, not so many Bourbons next year. I haven’t actually thought about a New Years resolution yet, I think I have given up on them.

Here is a thought – I think that for a strong willed, self disciplined person a resolution can change behaviours, and that’s a good thing. Except I am not that person.  I am more like the ride at Dream World on the Gold Coast….can’t remember the name of it, but it is like a roller coaster with carriages except it doesn’t do a circuit, it just tries to make it to the top of a Tower. As it nears the top gravity slows it down and suddenly your whizzing backwards at the same speed (if not faster) than you were two seconds ago.

I think a lot of people think that the goal of Christianity is to change our behaviour to be like Christ, a lot of effort is exerted to try and get to the top of this tower.  Here is an important point – this is not what Christianity is about. You can try hard but you’ll never get there. You’ll think your at the top of the tower but gravity is a powerful force of nature that self discipline can not fight. The goal of Christianity is actually, soley, to restore our relationship with God. I’m not going to pretend I understand how all of this works, I have just learned that there is a certain amount of resting required, we above all need to rest in the knowledge that our Heavenly Father loves and cares for us no matter what. The Kingdom of God is often opposite to how our minds work – the best way to achieve something is to rest?  God is the one that does the work – and he finished it. The result of all this is evident in positive changes. (Fruits of the Spirit)

My last post talked about Owls. Harry Potter Owls. The Holy Spirit Owls. I think it is interesting to take a look at what has happened in history and what is happening now and look with Harry Potter goggles and notice the Owls. I reckon you can see the Owls at work and the Durselys fighting tooth and nail against them. The Owls are often shot off their perches for being pesky. For example remember things like the abolition of slavery, racial integration, the rights of women – Owls came with a message and it was more often than not the church that stood in opposition to that message. Today is another time for Owls, flocks of them. If you remember in the book, the Owls multiplied to the point that they were everywhere and Mr Dursley was driven to the point of madness. The message of todays Owls is for freedom and acceptance of minorities. (sound like a recurring message?) The Owls have a message for the LGBTI community and the church opposes it. The number of owls is increasing and the agitation that it is causing  the church is evidence that madness is nearly here.

Madness is nearly here!

Madness is nearly here!

The number and ferocity of the incoming mail eventually drove Mr Dursely to take his family to an Island. To a small shack. It is here that the message finally gets through. The Owls carry messages for all of us but this particular one is for the LGBTI community:

Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore

Dear Mr Potter,

We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.

Please accept our apology for the lateness of this invitation. You have always had a place prepared for you here, however many “squibs” have misunderstood and twisted my directives and consequently altered my correspondence with you.  My people have always been slow to understand and obstinate in many ways, but I have promised to be their Headmaster and will continue to keep them in my employ. Please accept our apology and be assured that the problems will be rectified.

We would also like to extend this invitation to your partner and look forward to celebrating your marriage with you.

Yours sincerely,

Albus Dumbledore.
