Lets Do the Twist

Continuing with my perusal of Mike Semmlers paper that was part of the 2012 ILC Conference in Canada.

In a section titled “How are we listening to scripture” he says:

“We ourselves or even a group of us cannot be the measure of what is truth. God’s Word is truth beyond us and the relativism of our contexts and culture. The truth of Scripture does not rest on the buyers choice or designer tailoring.”

I am a tad confused with this statement, only because I wonder – who is it that can know truth?  I mean, a group of people got together and said: “The Church acknowledges and accepts as true expositions of the Word of God and as its own confession all the Symbolical Books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church contained in the Book of Concord of 1580…..”  I think what he is saying is that it is only certain groups that can know truth.

Mike Semmler says: “There are some twisted efforts at reducing the meaning of (arsenokoitai) in 1 Timothy 1”

Let’s read the passaage in question:

We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.  We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,  for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine  that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.” 1Timoty 1: 8-10

Notice the bold print – I added that in – not God. The word homosexuality was first added into this text in 1958. I agree with Mike Semmler on this one, we shouldn’t twist scripture. We have accepted that Lutherans have the true expositions of the Word of God, so rather than go with the 1958 twist, we should surely follow Martin Luther.

Martin Luther translated the word to mean Masturbators.

This translation is OK with me........

This translation is OK with me……..

Really Tap? Really? You say the word Masturbators and then you put THAT Picture?

  2. Karin says:

I am struck by the fact that we can say “God’s Word is truth beyond us” and then claim that the LCA holds the truth and that anyone who does not agree with current church teaching is therefore wrong.

  3. Pr Semmler consistently says vague things. It would be interesting to know if he has a reading list.

  4. Do you have a url for Pr Semmler’s address by any chance?
